As we are wrapping up for Christmas, we are thankful for another year at NB Chartered Communications and for the clients who keep us in business. In 2017 Nicola had the privilege of managing exciting projects and attending amazing events.

Meeting Sheryl Sandberg

The highlight of 2017 for Nicola was when Nuala Murphy, CEO of Moment Health and Founder of Lean In Belfast and Lean In Ireland, surprised her with the honour of being one of only 20 Lean In members invited to an exclusive audience with Sheryl Sandberg ahead of her fireside chat with Nuala at London’s British Library.

Eastside Awards

The year started in celebration of all that is good about East Belfast with the inaugural Eastside Awards in January. Twelve winners received awards for their achievements and James Brown MBE received the ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award.

Glenarm Castle New Tea Rooms

In spring, Nicola arranged for Lady Dunluce to welcome a group of media into Glenarm Castle for the launch of the new Tea Room. The assembled journalists also got a sneak preview of the abundance of floral fragrance and colour from the tulips in the Walled Garden ahead of the renowned Tulip Festival.

Training for Local Councils

Nicola provided training to delegates eager to learn how to promote their tourism businesses using digital marketing and public relations. These courses were funded by Antrim & Newtownabbey Council; Armagh City Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and Mid Ulster District Council.

Hillmount on UTV Life

In 2017, Nicola negotiated a new regular feature with UTV Life for Hillmount. Gardening expert and third generation owner of the family run garden centre, Robin Mercer, joins presenter Rita Fitzgerald to offer viewers advice relevant to the season.

Official Opening of Hillmount Ards with Mayor

Hillmount opened its third garden lifestyle centre in Ards with an investment of £1 million. Nicola invited the Mayor of Ards and North Down to perform the official opening in front of an invited audience before the garden centre started trading to the public.

Google Digital Garage On Tour Northern Ireland

Nicola partnered with trainingmatchmaker.com to host Google on a roadshow across Northern Ireland event managing Google Digital Garage events in Craigavon, Derry~Londonderry and Enniskillen. Topics addressed included telling your story online, how to reach new customers online and knowing your business with Google analytics. These events were attended by almost 500 delegates and were supported by Armagh City Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Banbridge District Enterprise, Derry City Hotel, Enniskillen BID, Lough Erne Resort, Ulster Bank and Ulster University Business School.

Collioure – Introduction to Republic Of Ireland

Working with Watson & Co Chartered Marketing, Nicola facilitated representatives of the Tourist Office of Collioure introducing the French region to a group of key influencers in Republic Of Ireland resulting in an exclusive visit to the region for opinion formers.


Nathan Carter Competition

Working with Tyrone Productions, Nicola managed the search for Nathan Carter fans to attend the recording of his television shows in Sligo and arranged interviews for Nathan with local media in Northern Ireland.

Laser Prototypes Investment

East Belfast company Laser Prototypes (LPE) announced an investment of £500,000 in a new 3D metal sintering machine – it is now the only company in Ireland to offer customers parts built in aluminium, stainless steel and titanium.


Jonathan Murphy Profile

Jonathan Murphy, who owns David Murphy Towing which is the largest towbar fitting centre in Northern Ireland, was the subject of Garage Trader’s ‘In the Driver’s Seat’ giving readers an insight into his career.

Lough Neagh Tours Launched

Lough Neagh Partnership launched a unique set of one day tours aimed at local, national and international visitors. There’s the Craic ‘n Food & Drink Tour; Wilderness Tour and Western Forts Tour and all provide an equally entertaining day out.

National Recognition for East Belfast Enterprise Digital Project

The ‘AR Story’ Project engaged 22 young people from inner East Belfast to create a tourism product using technology, developing their understanding of self-employment and telling their story of where they live, in an augmented/virtual reality setting.  The young people scoped out the potential product, with Augmented Reality 360-degree camera technology to design and develop a suitable product for launch. They learned about cutting edge digital tools; technology to inspire the local young people to engage in their local area and their own personal skills development. The project was shortlisted for a prestigious UK wide award, The NextGen Digital Skills Award. The NextGen Digital Challenge Awards celebrate innovation, success and leadership in the UK’s digitally transformed economy dubbed ‘the Oscars’ for the best in next generation digital innovation.

Boojum’s Dublin Job Creation

With the opening of two new stores in Dublin at Hanover Quay and Smithfield, the cult Mexican burrito bar created 60 jobs. Boojum is aimed at people wanting excellent quality food at a great price point which is hyper convenient and served with personality!

Award Wins for Sugar Rush Creative

Following award successes for Sugar Rush Creative at the start of 2017, founder Ali MacFarlane shared his opinion on the seismic shift in app development with media across Northern Ireland, United Kingdom and Republic Of Ireland.

Derry City & Strabane District Council Mayor’s Reception

Nicola linked up with Derry City & Strabane District Council to organise a civic reception with the Mayor, Alderman Hilary McClintock, to celebrate Browns Bonds Hill receiving the prestigious ‘Best Restaurant in Ulster’ award for the second time from Restaurants Association of Ireland.

BBC Saturday Kitchen Appearance for Ian Orr

Following months of planning, Celebrity Chef Ian Orr made his debut appearance on BBC television’s Saturday Kitchen in August 2017. Hosted by Matt Tebbutt, the special guest was Gemma Whelan or Yara Greyjoy of Game Of Thrones!

Moment Health Tackling Maternal Mental Health

Tech entrepreneur Nuala Murphy, CEO of Moment Health, is commencing a Clinical Trial for the company’s first innovation, the Moment Health App, with Ulster University. The no 1 ranked UK health and fitness app has been named ‘app of the week’ by Daily Mirror.

Interactive Schools Project at Heaney HomePlace

Lough Neagh Landscape Partnership launched the “My Place Within the Landscape” programme featuring field trips to selected natural heritage sites exploring first-hand the Nobel Laureate’s poetry in the very landscape around Lough Neagh and Lough Beg that inspired so much of his work, taking in Toner’s Bog, Church Island, turf-cutting and farming.

Innovate NI Mentoring: Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council

Double Visit to House of Lords

Nicola had the privilege of attending two events in the House of Lords in September. She was invited by Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) to celebrate becoming a Fellow of both CIPR and CIM in 2017.

As we wrap up for Christmas we’ll be revealing the finalists of the second Eastside Awards and putting the finishing touches to a new website for NIACE (Northern Ireland Advanced Composites and Engineering) before switching off to catch up with family and friends.
